For All Intents and Purposes
By: Zekeya Hurley
how soothing is the sound of an ambulance siren
the blaring red of an emergency vehicle
comforting it is to know that the incident is not yours
that you don’t have to call your mother
with tears stuck to your throat
that the fire is not your problem
that all your limbs are intact
how sweet the sound of a piercing ring
even when it is you,
chest against the sky
blinking at a star
you think will be your last sight
the sun comes in the form of a red and white truck
with miracles on the horizon
