Illustration from John Tenniel, Original Illustrator Lewis Carroll’s of Alice and Wonderland
The very keen reader can find mathematics woven into the story of Alice in Wonderland. Author Lewis Carroll was a conservative mathematician who opposed new additions to math such as the unit of time, which had been introduced to new arithmetic. This was the reason why Time was not invited to the tea party between the Mad Hatter, the March Hare, the Dormouse, and Alice; it is one point in the secret satire against the new developments in mathematics that Carroll so opposed.
